What is a Hackathon?
A hackathon is a fast-paced, hands-on event designed to bring people together to explore complex challenges through creative thinking and collaboration. Over three energising hours, participants work in small, facilitated teams to generate practical ideas and potential solutions to real-world public sector and policy challenges.
About the IPAA ACT NAIDOC Week Hackathon
Established in 2022, the IPAA ACT NAIDOC Week Hackathon brings together First Nations and non-First Nations public sector professionals to explore practical, future-focused ideas for change. Beginning with a focus on improving employment outcomes for First Nations peoples, the Hackathon has since examined community consultation, the integration of Indigenous values and cultural safety, and the next generation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leadership.
Each year, participants collaborate across perspectives and experiences to develop ideas that support a more inclusive, culturally responsive and self-determined public sector.
NAIDOC Week Hackathon 2026
The 2026 NAIDOC Week theme, ‘50 Years of Deadly’, provides an opportunity to acknowledge and honour the generations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who have shaped, strengthened and sustained the NAIDOC movement.
It recognises the Elders, community leaders, organisers, artists, advocates and families whose courage, resilience and leadership have created space for culture, identity, truth-telling and self-determination to be celebrated and advanced. It also invites reflection on the stories, languages, marches, creative expression and collective action that have contributed to the progress achieved over the past 50 years.
This year’s theme is not only a celebration of history, but a recognition of the strength, leadership and influence of First Nations peoples today. Across sectors including health, education, media, business, the arts and public administration, First Nations peoples continue to lead change, shape narratives and contribute to stronger communities and systems.
